This summer I also got to be a part of my state's fine arts framework revision committee. I spent two weeks in Little Rock, Arkansas with a group of awesome visual arts educators AND music, drama, and dance educators, too! Why "write" new state frameworks when we have awesome, new National Core Arts Standards?? Well, it seems those Common Core Standards have really caused a raucous in different ways in different states. I cannot divulge what our new state visual arts frameworks and SLEs (Student Learning Expectations) will be until they are officially approved by the state, but we reviewed all of the state frameworks from around the US and international frameworks. We also looked to the new National Core Arts Standards and Common Core Standards for inspiration and guidance. I am pleased with what our visual art framework revision committee created - and I think many of the teachers in our state will be pleased, too. Stay tuned for more on this!
So I guess my summer wasn't totally relaxing… having spent two weeks working on arts frameworks, I really didn't get too much of a break, but it was such an important job where the outcome affects so many students and teachers across the state. It was fun to connect with other teachers and administrators in my state. Our Arkansas Department of Education folks are also so knowledgeable. It was good to get to know those folks, too! So - I am off to start "shopping" for art supplies for my choice-based classroom. I will be back to blog about products and organization ….as I really do need to get in my classroom in about a week to start rearranging and setting up my room. I have some new ideas for that, too!
How did you enjoy your summertime? Did you spend it thinking about your art classroom? Enjoy the rest of your summertime, y'all!
Artfully Yours… Nikki
